The customers who quietly stopped

Most lapsed-customer emails treat everyone the same and shout about a discount. We separate the people who are simply overdue from the people who have moved on, and write to each of them differently.

  • Segmented, not blasted
  • Deliverability protected
  • Suppression handled
  • 30 days' notice

Every store has a list of people who bought once or twice and then stopped. The usual response is a 20% off email to all of them, which trains the loyal ones to wait for discounts and annoys the rest into unsubscribing.

The useful version separates the groups. Someone 20 days past their usual reorder gap needs a reminder. Someone who has not bought in 14 months needs a different message, or none at all — and knowing which is which is most of the work.

The gap

What usually goes wrong

  • One discount email to everybody who has gone quiet.
  • Loyal customers learn to wait for the next offer.
  • Dead addresses stay on the list and wreck deliverability.
  • Nobody knows what 'lapsed' means for this store.

None of this is a software problem. The tools have existed for years. The problem is that running them properly is somebody's full-time job.

The service

How we do it

Overdue is not the same as gone

We define lapsed against your own purchase intervals rather than a round number of days, then split the list into overdue, drifting and genuinely finished. Each group gets a different message and a different offer, if any.

Discounts last, not first

The first message gives a reason to come back that is not money — a new line, a restock, something they bought before. The discount, if it happens at all, arrives after that has failed.

Knowing when to stop

Two attempts, then suppression. Mailing people who have ignored you for a year is what ruins sender reputation and lands the rest of your email in spam. We will not do it, even if asked.

List hygiene as part of the job

Hard bounces and long-dead addresses come off the list. A smaller list that lands in inboxes is worth more than a big one that does not.

Consent checked before anything sends

Old lists are where consent problems hide. If the permission is not there or cannot be evidenced, we fix that first — it is also the part that carries a fine.

Reported by cohort

How many came back, from which group, and what it was worth — so you can see whether the segment is worth mailing again next quarter.

How it works

Four steps, and three of them are ours

  1. Step 01

    Store review

We look at your checkout, your order history and the marketing consent you already hold, then tell you what we think it is worth — including if the honest answer is not much yet.

  2. Step 02

    We build it

We connect your store and your sending accounts, build the flows, set up opt-out handling and test everything on our own phones and inboxes before a single customer sees it.

  3. Step 03

    We run it

The flows go live and stay monitored. We adjust timing, wording, channel mix and sequencing as the numbers come in. Nothing lands on your team.

  4. Step 04

    You get the numbers

A report every month: what was recovered, what was reordered, what we changed and what we are trying next. Cancel on 30 days' notice at any point.

What you get

One monthly fee, everything in it

No setup fee, no change fees. We quote once we have seen your store and your list.

  • Lapsed definitions built from your own data
  • Segmented sequences, written and run
  • Suppression and list hygiene
  • Up to 5,000 SMS or WhatsApp messages a month, email on top
  • Reporting by cohort

We take on a small number of stores at a time so that each one gets looked at properly.

FAQ

The questions worth asking

Can you just email everyone who has not bought in a year?

We would rather not, and usually will not. Mailing a large, cold, unengaged list is the fastest way to damage your sender reputation and push your good email into spam folders. We will send to a tested slice, see how it behaves, and expand only if the numbers say it is safe.

Is a discount not the simplest thing that works?

It works once. It also teaches your best customers that waiting is rewarded, and it drags your margin down permanently. We use discounts where they are the only lever left, not as the opening move.

Is this an app I install?

No. Openable is a service, not software. We build the flows inside your own store and your own sending accounts, write the messages and run them for you. There is nothing for your team to install or learn, and nothing stops working if you leave.

Which platforms do you work with?

Shopify and WooCommerce. Those two cover most of what we are asked for, and both give us the order history the timing depends on. If you are on something else, ask — the answer is sometimes yes, and we will say so quickly if it is no.

Which channels?

Email, SMS and WhatsApp, usually in combination. Email carries the detail and costs almost nothing to send; SMS and WhatsApp get read in minutes and are better for time-sensitive nudges. WhatsApp needs Meta business verification and approved templates before it can go live, which we handle, but it adds a week or two at the start.

Am I tied in?

No. 30 days' notice, and the flows are built in accounts you own, so they stay with you when you leave.

See what is actually recoverable

Send us your store and a few details. We will look at what you have, then come back with what we think we can do, what it would cost, and how soon we could start — or with an honest no.
